hey guys , i ve got a binks mg-1 and this may sound like i real rookie question , but do you set up the gun differently for bases or clears, also do most of you adjust the gun differently? just a little curious

best advice i can say is play with the setting and the air pressure you will find what works best for you might not for others i ran into that all the time with shop owners .you know the ones that been saying i been do this your 20 plus years. mix up a bit of base and clear and see what one works best in the gun .
i like my iwata for clear work never tried it for bases

someone did a great tech guide for this on mike learns site if i can find it i will post the correct way to set up any gun
i own a binks mig amongst others and its an hvlp so you need around 29 psi going into the gun ,set your regulator on the compressor to that but add extra for long hoses
if you have a regulator with a gauge on the gun it should read 29psi wide open[the regulator not the gun] dont try to regulate from the gun gauge its there just to show you what the compressor is putting out from its diaphragm regulator which gives far more acurate control
you may find that a touch more than the recomended 29 psi gun inlet pressure gives better results on hvlp units
mig,s only use about 10cfm and give a soft spray pattern probably more suited to bases than clears
for clears you need a 1.4 set up or bigger ,for bases 1.3 to 1.4 ,your gun may have the 95P aircap which is supposed to the best for automotive but results do depend on tip sizes and aircaps
leave the fan control wide open but turn the paint back to virtualy zero then turn out by half a turn testing your pattern as you go until you are happy with the results
if you cant get good even flat results first look at your paint viscosity maybe a touch more reducer or try gradualy reduceing the fan
you should get good results from a binks mig they are pretty decent guns

Just a quick rule of thumb that I use when choosing air pressure and volume control. It doesn't really matter what your spraying it's the viscosity of what it is. Thus correcting your gun ( air pressure and volume) to the viscosity is easier for me then saying base or clear.. So say you keep your trigger fully out like me... then only adjust airpressure by the thickness (viscosity) the thicker needs more airflow to atomize it and the thinner needs less. it doesn't matter really how you get to the end result just as long as you get there!
