How do I remove the rubber trim piece on the bottom edge of a helmet (skid lid)? I tried just pulling it off and a chunk of the helmet finish came off with it. Do I need a heat gun or some type of solvent to delaminate it?

If its the ones I'm thinking of you really just want to tape around them. They wont come off without a knife and a heat gun BUT the heat gun can warp the lid (Yeah I've done it ).
Is it the ones from Renegade appear?

Thanks. I tried a hairdryer and I streched the rubber by pulling to hard on it. Tape sounds mo betta. Ordered it from J&P. Bikers Choice brand.

I found a site that sells the rubber and glue also.

try this. Hope it helps!

it's very easy to get it off with a knife and you'll end up with better finish as opposed to masking it.

There is a skid lid that is sold locally that is darn near impossible to get off. Taping around it is the best way but there are a few out there that will just peal off by hand. Depends on who makes it.

i know on mx helmets it's darn near impossible to get one off without messin it up.
you can peel it back a small amount and use wire shoved under then remove wire after clear to let the lip fall back down over your edge too.

I usually just untape while the clear is still flowing out. Not super wet, but sticky. You kinda gotta get a feel for it, but it works for me. I gotta try the wire trick, tho.

Thx a bunch for the info. It helps mondo amounts.

I prefer to take off the rubber carefully with cutter,
give me much more clean edges after finish

For mx helmets or even streetbike helmets, the liner is near impossible to get off. I tried to take off the liner on a shoei mx helmet but it seemed a little risky......I didnt even attempt it on one of the shoei street bike helmets i painted. What i do is tape off the liner with a standard 1 in green masking tape and get it nearly to the edge of the liner, but just leave a tiny amount of liner still exposed...Then go over that with either some 1/8" or 1/16" fineline tape to get it exactly on the edge of the liner....Remove the fineline right after primer then re apply tape for basecoat and clear then remove right after clearing. I actually got to go and check out troy lee designs and they were just taping off the liners.....Its too much of a hassel and risk to take off the liner then glue it back on...
good luck

that works good if its a white helmet and all but if u have a helmet with alot of graphics on them, it works better taking off, yes the shoei trim is a pain, i heard a guy say that he would order them without the trim and send it back to have them put it back on, ive taken the trim off some fox and hjc helmets with no problems and this new oneal one i just got seems to come off, it just really depends on the helmet

Just a note on the wire trick. Thx SeanOzz that is slicker than grease moose poop! LOL. It looks factory and all without even messing with the trim. GOT WIRE? ..... Pix from phone r kinda crappy.

wow, glad to hear it worked. what gauge wire did you end up having sucess with?
did it work for you as well on the base trim as around the face ?

I used 22 guage stranded and yes, it worked great everywhere. It makes masking way easier and wayyy faster.

Hey Sean, can you elaborate on this procedure? Sounds like it's a winner - I'd like to try it.
Thanks,

I had a moment of clarity and realized what you were talking about with the wire  this should work great. You obviouly want to pull the wire after your clear is dry. Polish first?

Do not let clear dry. I pull wire our after it stops "stringing" when touched.

its kind of hard when ur doing alot of graphics, i just did some flake for some numbers on a helmet, and i had to clear it a few times. would be a bitch to do that every time

Its easier than you think and the results are way worth it. Just use the same piece of wire over and over if you dont remove it each time it will build up a funky edge that looks kinda funny under the rubber. That is why I take it out each time before the clear dries so the rubber can flatten any edge I might have. Masking is way faster with this method also because instead of me putting on my glasses and slowly following the trim/paint line I just tape it up and leave a little tape above the rubber trim then fold the tape over the top of the trim with my fingernail since it is spaced away from the surface. GOT WIRE!!!

Well, I just did the seal, flake base, Kandy and clear on my first helmet - using the wire trick. I don't know how you would pull that wire while the clear is still wet... it would definately mess it up. Maybe I'm using too heavy a gauge of wire. I did pull it after it was dry, and it looks great. Probably could have left it in for the next round of clear after graphics.

I use 22 ga. stranded. It depends more on the softness of the rubber than the guage of the wire. The rubber on the mx helmet was soft so I could pull the wire out perpindicular to the surface and the rubber just pulled away then returned to its natural state. With harder rubber trims that do not allow you to do that you have to pull it out more parallel with the helmet and probably wait till the clear dries. The harder rubber will also not show the little bit of build like the soft rubber would. Post some pics when you are done.
