I would imagine that it is tough being a street vendor in New York City. Just blink your eyelashes and play all girlie, girlie, and tell them that you are hungry and need to pay the rent and that this is better than what the other girls are selling, that they should go hassle them!!!
Those hats look awesome girlfriend! Hope you have a sell out Saturday for sure. Then you'll have to spend all day Sunday cleaning up the mess from painting them. hee hee

Look great and I can't wait to hear more about your po-po story.
After living in the slums of Louisville for 9 years I came to the conclusion that the police would rather hassle people who are mainly law abiding citizens than chase drug dealers and real criminals. That way they can turn in their reports at the end of the day and make it look like they actually did something without running the risk of getting shot. I also had the opportunity on numerous occasions to witness how they make their money on the side. It's amazing how many cops are on the take.

You never told us about the cop problems. So what's the problem with them. Do you have a license to sell there? And if so do you have yours?

SO POLICE ISSUES,,,GOD WHERE TO START,,
about maybe 4 years ago ,,maybe 5 (but not 5 yet i dont think so) i started selling art items on the streets of nyc,,i didnt even have a legit table,,i used a table cloth and cardboard boxes and laid the items down on the streets like a vendor,,MUST OF LOOKED LIKE A BUM now that i look back at it,,lol,,i would only have like one person if i was lucky who would actually stop and notice i was there,,i was also all shy to show my stuff,,,:o lol i would hang my tshirts on fences,,,and they were displayed high up for cars passing by,,LOL,,so silly i was,,,
POLICE USE TO CHASE ME ALOT CAUSE I WASNT LEGIT,,
SO IVE BEEN STRUGGLING WITH POLICE ISSUES SINCE DAY ONE,,,last year i had a good year,,because i spent one day before the summer came filing papers,,and getting proper id to stay out and do art work on streets,,,they said I WAS FINALLY LEGIT AND THEY WILL LEAVE ME ALONE now,,,, HA HA THEY LIED,,NOW THEY CAN TAX ME FOR EVERY STEP I DO WRONG,,
they BASICALLY CLOSED MY CORNER DOWN,,my crowd was super big too,,,they gave me 2 tickets about 2 weeks ago for VENDING WITHOUT A LICENSE,,they claim my graffiti hats are MERCHANDISE AND NOT ART WORK:mad: WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH THEM,,? they gave me another ticket for being within 20 ft from STORE FRONT DOOR,,,"B.S" ticket SO i went to a new spot cause the tickets are VERY PRICEY,,and they WILL ARREST ME if they feel IM BREAKING LAW ,,ive seen them take 2 of my friends in DECEMBER FOR VENDING WITH OUT PAPER,S,,,AND ALL THERE STUFF TOO,,

THE OTHER THING IS,,i got environmentalist or activist type that love to come by and tell the police someone is doing graffiti and spraying in public,,and polluting the air,,,i cant breathe,,blah blah blah,,,make them stop,,blah blah blah,,and they hate on me,,
also,,i brought a co2 tanks and asked THE DEALER if this is STREET REGULATED,,HE GAVE ME PROPER PAPERS TO WITH SAFETY PRECAUTIONS,,which shuts big mouths up right away,,
also,,STREET VENDORS are the worst type,,they hate seeing another vendor making money so they pick up phone and call police on ya too,,they even called the DEP AGENTS ON ME,, so im not polluting the environment,
also,,they steal from me too,,THE STREET BUMS ,,homeless people,,junkies,, COME ON LEAVE ME ALONE ALREADY,,
the GRAFFITI ARTIST ,,hate on me too,,because they are too dumb to realize they can make a living off art INSTEAD OF a criminal record ,,THEY TRY TO BULLY ME ALL THE TIME,,:(
so its tough alot,,and the police are just another part of the game,,NOW BEING IN MY NEW SPOT,,i have to watch OUT FOR PARKS ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS,,since i have proper paper work,,i can go right in park now,,i dont have to hide anymore,,and i can build a big crowd with paint flinging ,,so they get tight on that too,,
I JUST WANT TO PAINT IN PEACE!
also,,,PEOPLE HAVE KNOCKED MY WABBLIE TABLE OVER,,,i had to run after my shoes from cars running them over,,,EVEN OTHER ARTIST,,they dont want more artist out,,its crazy ,,i thought the police would protect me,,HA HA I WAS WRONG,,THEY ARE TRYING TO MAKE ME BANKRUPT,,

There is a very big difference between us. I rent a building. And I don't sell local. All my sales for 20 years now have been mail order and internet.

That is a heck of a way to have to make a living! I tell you if it was left up to the government we wouldn't even be able to get out of our house. I am so sorry you have to put up with that crap. You are such a talented artist and it looks like you have a lot of fun doing what you do in the outdoors. A show along with the talent. And to think, the season is just now beginning... Making me tense just thinking about you.

Nat,
I see you have a website and thats a great place to start. But have you thought about selling your art through other means? For instance skate shops, urban culture type clothing shops etc may take your art on commision? and what about looking at doing some hard items in the same vein? See if you can purchase some cheap skate decks, or helmets and seek a panel shop that will clear them off for you? please don't think that I'm getting on my high horse and telling you how to make a living.
Its amazing high sometimes we over look the obvious. My next door neighbours son got a new bike lid a while ago, i suggested i throw some colour on it, Afterwards his son took it back to the shop and showed the the owner, now im being hassled to go grab some lids off him because he wants my work in his shop! the scary thing is i knocked it up in less then half an hour and told him the art would cost him Aus$100 hes wrapped!!

I understand where you guys are coming from but have you watched her video? There's a show that goes along with it that draws the crowds and probably brings her in more money... sad when you can't even make a living.

I understand Dawn, but really its a hard way to earn a buck, and takes a lot of pleasure out of the art when you spend you whole day looking over your shoulder! Surely there has got to be a way of doing this legitimatley, without all the hassle!

i cant find skateboards,,,they all seem to be painted,,,where do i get blanks from,,but i like my wabblie table spot,,,its like dawn said a big show,,but i do need to get myself bigger and better work,,for winters i miss out,,,rainy days blow too,,
i have just started to try the construction helmet thing,,and will keep working on it,,maybe if i set up a whole bunch of these helmets i would catch new buyers in a different market,,more money,,still working on a plan with that,,
wanted to drag home a few bikes,,bicycles that i found in street and paint them up to advertise at spot,,but it got to be too much to drag with me,,that sh*t is heavy after a while,,i will paint mine over and over till i build a book up to advertise on better surfaces,,im trying and here it all the time that i need to find more money in what i do,,,plus i the canvas thing this winter was working well on ebay for me,,,but i never know what people will buy,,im confident they always buy my hats,,LOL
good advice from everyone,,,im always open to improve myself,,at least i got a crowd going now,,,its LIKE A WHOLE SHOW I HAVE TO PUT ON,,LOL,,I FLICK AND THEY SAY """OOOOO,,,,AAAAA"" LOL,,
PS I WAS TOLD TOO TO BRING MY HATS,,to some urban stores?
((deluzional))
03-27-2008, 01:41 AM
maybe the urban stores that want your hats would give you permission to set up in front of their store or in their front window on certain days. That way, they can feed off the crowd you draw in off the street, and you usually get less flac from the law when you're on private property with the owner's permission.

i would imagine giovanni in greece all ya see is these wonderful street artist,,,here they say it an eye soar,,tourist love us,,,
I DO KNOW HOW TO KICK BETWEEN THE LEGS AND RUN FAST,, yeah i thought of that,,but sometimes they want a percentage or a fee,,but in the beginning i stayed away from those shops cause i wasnt sure if i could make money,,like sunday all i made was 20 bucks,,its was easter sunday,,so imagine if i paid someone 200 to 150 a day to let me stay at the front entrance of there store,,i would loose out,,,
the street fairs cost 200 a day to 150,,,and people have offered me a rental fee for a shelf to display hats a week at 200 a month,,,BUT STILL A BIT SHAKEY ON DOING IT,,you know i have good days and dri days,,so its a tough call,,,
i will post how i carry everything,,,,OOO THE WORST PART OF IT ALL,,,getting it there and back,,lol,,the co2 tank is heavy for me,,THE GUY SOLD ME AN ALUMINUM TANK,,says it lighter for me,,and its still mad heavy,,lol,,so i when its windy out or not warm enough i just do hats and markers and tshirts presprayed,,they usually do well,,but summer i spray all day in sun,,
